STRUCTURAL REFORM

We are directing a program aimed at structural reform in higher education.

CEHE is supporting a variety of projects dedicated to governance reform, including specifically empowering trustees to take more responsibility for the supervision of their campuses. We are also studying the question of college rankings, with a view toward creating a new system of comparing colleges and universities that would enhance U.S. News & World Reports and other rankings. In addition, we are engaged in a related project to improve the current system of higher education accreditation. One of the main problems of tackling higher education reform is the fact that there are several thousand schools spread across 50 states. We believe that rankings and accreditation are two areas where a concentrated effort can have an effect on higher education as a whole, rather than a particular institution in a given state.
